I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book-and still purchased it!I knew I was going to be in trouble with this book. From the moment I saw this blurb I knew I needed to read this-and that I was going to be in for one hell of a ride. I can say that this book by far exceeded my expectations-and I'll admit they were high expectations. This book hooked me from the very first sentence and I couldn't stop once I'd started. This is something I'll go back to over and over again to read and fall in love with.
I just have to say I wanted to hug Taylor. I really, truly did. She needed a friend and I wanted to volunteer as tribute, but thankfully she had Brit and Daisy. Taylor is a strong, strong woman in a sense, but she didn't have a choice to be otherwise. She desperately wants to be loved, but she doesn't necessarily feel deserving, or understand how to feel and accept love. It makes her seem cold at times, but she's not.
Nick? Well I didn't expect for him to rank as high as he currently does on my Lauren Layne book boyfriend list. I believed I'd have fun with him, I'd like him and enjoy his story. But this was more than that. I loved him. I truly felt for him-and once you read this you will, too. He has a story that I didn't see coming and I loved seeing a side to him that I didn't expect.
These two were a great example of a frenemy to lovers storyline. There's chemistry between them but the timing isn't right initially, which had me cursing. But it worked. It totally worked here to have these other people and other relationships in the way because honestly? That's real life sometimes. Sometimes timing sucks. Sometimes it works out. Once it works out for Taylor and Nick? Watch out.
This story was not what I thought it would be. It was so much better (and again, I have high expectations for this author's works!) and such a rollercoaster ride. I cried during this book-in more than one spot. Which doesn't happen often, honestly. But there were situations in this book that just tugged at my heartstrings and had me wiping me eyes. The writing is strong. The situations are completely believable. I got to catch up with old friends-which I loved-but this can be read as a standalone.
If you haven't read Lauren Layne I highly recommend her. This book is one of my favorites of the year and one I will absolutely go back to and read again and again.

I Knew You Were Trouble An Oxford Novel edition by Lauren Layne Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
Broken women, I admit sometimes I’m a little hard on them as a reader. Usually I think they are whiny or bitchy or just mean and so I generally have a hard time connecting. But Lauren Layne gets me and she gave me a woman who wants to be loved so much, but at the same time is driven in her life and doesn’t really complain and boo-hoo about it she just pulls her boot straps up, makes a plan and gets stuff done. Sure Taylor has some baggage but overall she is a heroine worth rooting for.
***She was prickly, and she knew it. But she wished that, just once, someone would get it. That they would understand she wasn’t icy so much as careful. That she didn’t know how to show vulnerability or softness, not because she didn’t feel it, but because she’d spent the past twentysomething years being told that crying made you weak, feelings left you vulnerable, and the only person you could count on was yourself.***
Enter Nick, he rubs her the wrong way and gets under Taylor’s skin. He is all wrong for her and yet he still seems to see through to the real girl under the prickles. Nick might be more than the part time fill in at Oxford magazine if she just got to know him. But their timing is horrible and never seems to line up. They spent a year in each other’s orbits and never getting the timing quite right but now Nick has volunteered to be Taylor’s roomie after the man she was supposed to be starting a new stage in life with abruptly breaks it all off.
I loved the slow burn romance between these two. You could tell right away the chemistry was there if they just got out of their own way and let it happen. I loved how patient Nick was while Taylor went through the stages of grief for a relationship that was completely wrong for her. But I also like he and her friends all gave her the tough love when she needed it.
***It’s Friday night and you’re newly single. You should be wearing that red dress that makes your boobs look huge and working the club scene, not spending it with Sandra Bullock in your pajamas. I’ve done movie night four times this week. I need to get out, Tay. So do you.”
Taylor nodded toward the credits of While You Were Sleeping. “But Sandy gets me.”
“Well, that’s probably true,” Brit muttered as she rummaged in her purse. “She spent seventy percent of that movie thinking she was in love with the wrong guy.”***
This is classic Lauren Layne with plenty of romcom cute and fantastic side characters to add some fun dialogue to the story. Plus she always has a few super great lines in the book that just make you want to stay in and relive the romance.
”… what’s Nick in your Taylor-is-the-sun scenario?”
“A prism,” Jess said without hesitation. “He takes your light and makes it even more awesome, for everyone to see.”
The only reason this gets downgraded a little is because there is one instance that I had to suspend disbelief a little. It was hard to believe that no one that knew both Nick and Taylor collectively didn’t know about the situation with Nick’s ex to clue Taylor in. Even part time Nick was like one of the crew, but overall I enjoyed the overall love story and resolution for this Oxford couple.
God. I say this every time but Lauren Layne's books are just it for me. They are absolutely amazing and honestly have the perfect combination of heart, humor and heat. They all should truly be put on a pedestal because nothing comes close. I am so so sad that I finished another one and that it's OVER and yet over the moon happy because that's exactly what her books to do me - make me giddy. I Knew You Were Trouble was absolutely fantastic and such an outstanding addition to the Oxford/Stiletto series. Taylor and Nick were absolutely perfect together. I could not have hoped for a better story. It was magical.
What happens when the tough, hard-shelled "Ice Princess" of the office, Taylor Carr, who's always striving for perfection and life according to a plan, clashes heads with Nick Ballantine, career bartender, freelance writer, all around nice guy—and longtime pain in Taylor’s side? FIREWORKS, folks! Their chemistry is combustible and their banter just as hot. I could not stop smiling at their back and forth. This was the perfect enemies to lovers office type romance. It was sexy, fun, emotional and an all around winner!
All in all, this book was outstanding. An added bonus is the fact that we got to reconnect with the whole Stiletto/Oxford family (Sigh...Lincoln). Ihope to the bottom of my hwart that we see a Brit and Hunter book!! Bravo. 5 stars! ~Ratula
