My Review: Oh my, oh my. Where do I begin? Let's just jump into the quagmire that is Firespell, shall we? This book is lacking in so very many areas. The storyline lags, the characters don't develop, it's supernatural and but isn't believable enough and there's not enough suspense or direction of the story. I make it sound enticing, no?

If you haven't guessed, I felt very underwhelmed by this book if not downright let down. I'm all for the supernatural/young adult read, you know I am, but this book just didn't cut it for me. I picked up this book on a whim from my local library because the description sounded similar to P.C and Kristin Cast's "House of Night" series (a Harry Potter-like boarding school but for teen vampires ...) which I enjoyed. {NOTE: For my review of the first House of Night book, Marked here: http://thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca/2009/11/book-marked-by-pc-and-k-cast.html}
Unfortunately this book didn't come close to the energy, storylines or characters of the first few books of the House of Night series. It actually felt like a book that a tween would read instead of a 'young adult/teen'. I may be a 40 year old mom but I do like a good YA read but a tween read? Um, no.

I think that the biggest issue that I had with the book stemmed from the length of the book. With only 246 pages there wasn't enough time to develop the storyline or characters. There are a lot of issues that are brought up but nothing seems resolved. Nor do we see the characters develop. Lily begins the book more independent than she acts later on in the book. She turns into a naïve, illogical flake that makes stupid decisions to trust certain people who literally just threw her under the proverbial bus a day before. Say wha?? Um no. That's not the way it works, nor how I want a main character to behave.

I will say that writing good, believable banter between characters is hard and I will admit that I'm picky. It has to feel real and not forced or fake. Unfortunately, the banter between Lily and Scout felt very awkward and kind of lame. The fact that these two very different girls become instant BFFs was far from believable and their 'banter' was very outdated. What modern teen uses the term 'brat pack'?? That's a term from the 80's. I should know because I adored "The Breakfast Club" which pretty much coined the term!

Overall, I felt frustrated with this book. There was no depth to the characters, storyline or setting. Plus, the powers of these youth are too vague and just lack overall oomph. I struggled to care about the characters and the storyline but just couldn't muster enough energy. This book lacked in pretty much all aspects, I'm sad to say.

Not recommended.

My Rating: 1/5 stars

Firespell Dark Elite Book 1 Chloe Neill 9780451228864 Books Reviews

I don't like to recap a novel's plot in a review because I feel like the book description does a pretty good job of teasing the story in most instances. However, I will tell you why I really enjoyed both books in the Dark Elite series. I am a huge fan of paranormal romance and action novels - vampires, werewolves, witches, etc... if it falls in one of these categories, then I'm interested in reading it. This includes anything from young adult to more r-rated novels - anything goes. However, as I've expanded my love of reading this genre, I've discovered there are just as many horrible writers as there are great ones in this genre. I have been a fan of Chloe Neill's Chicagoland vampire series for quite some time - in fact, it is definitely one of my favorite series in the genre! (Although those books definitely fall in the more adult category). So earlier this year, I decided to give this young adult series a try, and once again, I was not disappointed. While many paranormal books have similar or overlapping themes, I enjoyed Neill's twist on the world of magic in this series. Also, I appreciate that these novels are truly age appropriate for young adults. I have read a few series before that contained very detailed intimate scenes between high school students in books being billed as appropriate for middle and high school aged readers. While I personally enjoy my fair share of juicy scenes, I wouldn't want my daughter reading them one day when she hits middle school age. Therefore, I appreciate Neill's ability to mix innocent age-appropriate romance and flirtations in with the action of these novels' plot. Yet, while these books are certainly age appropriate for young adults, they are not written in a flighty high school tone which would turn off adults. On the contrary, I find a lot of adults (like myself) still really enjoy young adult fiction, and if that's the case, you will not be disappointed in this series. Now if you like a little more spice in your novels... then definitely check out her Chicagoland vampire series! Also, please note this review applies to both the first and second book in the Dark Elite series (Firespell and Hexbound) so I will be posting the same review under both titles. I do recommend reading the stories in book order (i.e. Firespell then Hexbound).
I enjoyed this book. I usually do like work by this author, and I was not disappointed this time. It is typical in many ways for the young adult genre, so readers should be ready for teenage behavior from the characters. That being said, this author is good at creating characters with interesting personalities, and if you like snark like I do, then this author's work is for you. I personally only read young adult books occasionally, but if you are or know an actual young adult that likes to read, I do recommend this book.
For as much as I enjoy the Chicagoland series, this book just didn't really do it for me. Chloe Neill's ya series, the Dark Elite, focuses on Lily Parker, a teenage girl who gets sent off to a fancy Chicago boarding school when her parents mysteriously go off on a "research trip." A lot of fishy stuff is going on at the boarding school, what with the weird noises and the mysterious outings her friend Scout keeps taking. Between that and how Lily is being treated by the popular girls at school, things have been tough for her since she joined St. Sophia's. Lily develops a fast friendship with Scout, though, and soon learns that there is a mysterious group of rebel teens with magical abilities lurking around the school at night, trying to keep the school safe from those who would do harm. As much as Lily would like to help, though, she can't without powers of her own to defend herself.
I felt this book was too rushed without enough development and "meat." There was hardly any character development, so we didn't really get to learn much about the characters, and the plot seemed to skip along without any suspense or anything. I was very underwhelmed and am in no hurry to finish the series, but since there are only two more books in the series, I suppose I'll eventually break down and give them a try.
