Nothing Else Matters Sam Casey Series Book 2 edition by SD Tooley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Nothing Else Matters is the second installment in the Sam Casey mysteries. Much like I commented on the first book, these are really good mysteries, but pretty weak in the romance department. The book picks up literally after the events of the first and is not a standalone novel. If you didn't read the first one, you'll miss a good chunk of what's going on here and who all the characters are. That said, this review will refer to events from the first book.

Being in a near catatonic state after the events of the last book, Seargent Sam Casey, suspended from the police force for suspicion of murder, is recovering in a mental rehab facility. She's also pregnant and dismayed to find that she's somehow married to Jake even though there were no witnesses to the ceremony and Sam was tricked into signing documents while recuperating in a mental facility. When she checks herself out of the clinic early, she finds that her mother is traveling to deal with reservation politics leaving her to live alone with Jake. The problem is, she's not speaking to Jake. She feels betrayed by his secrets from the first book and believes he's supporting a corrupt police captain which doesn't look good since he's been recently promoted. As she struggles with her hormones and what to do with her time, she gets an offer through her attorney to privately investigate a homocide on a river boat casino. After being blown off by Jake, the primary to the official police investigation, she accepts the private case and finds herself two steps ahead of Jake who completely undervalued Sam's special abilities to see visions and interpret moments of death. Eventually the case becomes pretty gruesome and Sam eventually ends up working with the police to solve not just a murder, but a counterfeit ring and a complicated government experiment.

I can't say that there was a tremendous amount of character development here since there are still a whole slew of unlikable characters, but I loved that the kick butt Sam Casey from the first couple of chapters of the first book came back and triumphed in her own way here. With the added crazy pregnancy hormones, I found myself laughing out loud during moments of insane beanie baby shopping and uncontrollable weaping. It was all the more funny since Jake didn't know Sam was pregnant and thought she needed to go back to rehab. The investigation was intense, brutally graphic and ultimately sad. All the characters are back for this book, but I found myself relieved that Abby, Sam's mother, was not as prominent here. If you thought the Jake/Abby relationship was creepy in the first book, this installment actually gave Sam and Jake an opportunity to interact with one another and build a relationship. As for the romance, I think the author is missing an opportunity to show us some sparks between these two. So far we're told that they love each other but we really don't see or feel it. Regardless, it's a wonderful mystery that packs some strong emotion.

Nothing Else Matters Sam Casey Series Book 2 edition by SD Tooley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I still think her husband is a jerk. She is more in the know but he refuses to acknowledge it. The fact he can not clear her is grating. Sparrow was interesting but sad.
Book Two really captured the twists and surprises I love in a mystery/thriller. Book one layed the groundwork, but book two has hooked me on the series!
A fun mystery series about a young half-native American woman and her adventures as a cop. She has an aura of mystery about her as well because of her inherited ability to see what happened when someone is murdered, which aids her in solving crimes.
A detective story with a hint of spirit I loved it I find myself fortunate to have found..because I've never seen a book of hers, anywhere, but hey it's Canada....she reminds slightly of my favourite of all times T.J.MacGregor where we're also looking at coupling, an FBI agent and Mira Morales who can see beyond reality, I make the reference because once you read one book, you'll want the series

This book is the 2nd in the Sam Casey series. I loved her 1st book and it sets the stage nicely for this story. You get to like the characters and believe it or not even the villain gets you in the end. A page turner with a twist. Great entertainment and a little gore. Can't wait to order the 3rd book. At $2.99 - very reasonable, for sure. I do not think we " Kuties" should pay over $9.99. Publishers better wise up. I used to be a Patterson and a Stuart Woods fan...now I won't buy their books at their ridiculous prices. Good for you S. D. Tooley!!! A new fan of Sam's!
So far this is a great series though I've only read books one and two so far. I will be reading the others. I agree with another reviewer who said this second book is even better than the first one. It has more twists and turns than a roller coaster ride! I literally couldn't put it down and read it mostly all the way through in one stretch. Not many books get me to do that! I need my beauty sleep...Samantha Casey is a heroine to be admired. She has strong values and a mystic ability inherited from her Lakota Sioux genes to "see" into people's lives after they're dead. That comes in handy doing police homicide work or private investigation. The plot development is strong as is that of the several sub-plots that are ongoing. A "make you catch your breath" ending doesn't hurt either. The only thing I can think of to add is, the retired FBI director had to know from the beginning...it will make sense if you read the book.
Nothing Else Matters is the second installment in the Sam Casey Mysteries. Detective Sgt Samantha "Sam" Casey is one-half Native American Indian and has some unusual inherited talents that most people think are very strange. Sam is an excellent homicide detective and has the ability to touch something of the dead person and the visions begin. The visions sometimes are clear and in order of how the person was killed and sometimes the visions are difficult to assess. Sam is on an extended leave from the force which is described in this book to catch the reader up to the current situation. Sam has married fellow detective Jake Mitchell and the two of them are quiet a pair. Despite the fact that Sam is on leave she still inserts herself in Jake's cases' which absolutely infuriates him. Sam just can't help herself. Now she has opened up a can of worms with their next case that involves lot money, a homicide and a tattoo on the killer's hand.
